Peer Tutoring Application

The staff at SJCC's  Learning Resource Center (LRC)  is looking for students to work as peer tutors; our program provides assistance for students in a variety of subjects,  either during scheduled appointments or on a drop-in basis. Sessions take place in the LRC's tutoring areas. 
LRC Tutors must be excellent students themselves, and are trained in techniques they use to assist students improve their learning and skills. Tutors receive the support of a team of instructors, tutoring coordinators, and other peer tutors throughout the semester.
Minimum expectations & requirements for applicants
-Responsibility, integrity, & personal initiative
-Superior skills (letter grade of 'A' or 'B') in one or more of any course/subject areas listed below:
Math 25 or higher -- English 1A, 1B, or  1C -- ESL 91 -- Statistics -- Physics 4A -- Chemistry 1A 
History -- Biology -- Accounting 20 or 21 -- Technology -- Psychology -- Foreign Language Study
Business -- Music -- Art History -- or other subjects or courses in the SJCC/EVC catalog
-Proven dependability, including prompt attendance for training, meetings, and scheduled work assignments
-Strong communication skills, including listening; for tutors in Math, Accounting, Statistics, the Sciences, & Technology, high-intermediate English listening, speaking, reading, & writing skills are also required  (the equivalent of successfully passing  ESL 314, 316, 317, 313  or above)
-Enthusiasm for learning student-centered tutoring techniques
-Sensitivity to the diverse culture and learning styles of SJCC’s student population
-Attendance at a 3-hour Peer Tutor Orientation on the first Friday of the semester in L-103 (usually from 12:00-3:00), for each semester of employment
-Successful completion of one semester of the LS 90 course, Directed Tutoring Experience, an online training/seminar course for new tutors; this course can be taken at the same time tutors are working
-Attendance at staff meetings throughout the semester

-Excellent and flexible work schedule, with tutors themselves choosing a schedule (up to 20 hours per week, MTWTHF), with starting pay at $13.50 an hour
-Development of communication, critical thinking, & subject-specific skills
-Excellent experience to include on university and scholarship applications, online work profiles, resumes, etc.
-Direct experience in an educational  environment

-Eligibility for CRLA tutoring certification 
-Development of leadership, transferable, and personal skills highly valued by 4­-year universities and employers

LRC Requirements; please check off the boxes below to indicate you are willing to comply with the following:

I am enrolled, or will enroll, in 6 or more units at SJCC and/or EVC during the semester I am applying to be a tutor,  and understand that this is a requirement to be eligible for student employment. *
I certify that I am 18 years or older and I can provide documents (click for examples of I-9 acceptable documents) that verify my identity and can show I am authorized to work in the United States.  *
If I am hired as an LRC Peer tutor, I will enroll in and complete Learning Skills (LS) 90, Directed Tutoring Experience, a semester length online course offered through Canvas. (1 unit of transferrable credit).  * 
I will attend the mandatory in-person orientation for all LRC tutors (both new and returning tutors), held on the first Friday of each new semester, from 12:00 until 3:00 in the RWC (L-103) * 
Tutors must give the LRC tutoring coordinators, Peiman Gheibi (Math, Sciences, Technology, and other subjects) or Evelyn Rojas (Writing & Reading only), their schedule of availability for tutoring no later than the second day of the semester. *
