SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION
This scholarship opportunity will give one incoming first-semester freshmen student the chance to share their first-semester experiences through the completion of weekly blog posts. Students qualified for this position will have excellent writing skills and a desire to share their experiences with the NIU community. The student selected for this position will be expected to post weekly blogs describing their experiences as they make their transition to NIU. Posts will include experiences and thoughts related to their personal, academic, and social development during their first-semester at Northern Illinois University. At minimum, the student will write sixteen blog posts reflecting their first-semester experience and submit them to FSYE staff prior to publishing. The student will receive a scholarship totaling $500 for the fall semester, paid in monthly installments. The student can use this money towards any charges on their student account, including tuition and books.
 
FIRST- YEAR EXPERIENCE MISSION STATEMENT
In support of the academic mission of the university, First- and Second-Year Experience (FSYE) aims to help all freshmen and transfer students effectively transition to Northern Illinois University. Through student-centered programs, courses and collaborative partnerships with faculty and staff, First-Year Experience strives to enhance students' academic achievement, to increase the likelihood of students persisting to graduation, and to help students integrate into the academic and social communities on NIU's campus.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 Be first-semester freshmen student;
 Positive attitude and enthusiasm for starting school at NIU;
 Awareness and appreciation of diversity in all its forms;
 Interest in sharing experiences, thoughts, and feelings in a public manner;
 Commitment to writing and submitting a blog post once per week for the duration of the fall 2014 semester;
 Currently enrolled full-time (minimum of 12 semester hours) as a first-semester freshman student for fall 2014.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Construct a blog post, according to guidelines provided by FSYE, once per week regarding life experiences as a first-year student at NIU;
 Be a positive role model and representative of NIU;
 Connect weekly with supervisor regarding blog ideas;
 Submit all blog posts on time;
 Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above in all NIU coursework;
 Remain in good academic standing and judicial university standing at all times. *Scholarship will be revoked if the student fails to maintain these eligibility requirements.*

 Opportunity to interview for a paid position with the First- and Second-Year Student Success Team for the semester following fall 2014;

Submit a one-page mock blog post following ONE of the prompts below using 12-point, Times New Roman font, double spaced, 1-inch margins, and proper spelling and grammar.
 
1) Create a mock blog describing your current outlook regarding begining school at NIU in fall 2014. What are you most excited and/or nervous about regarding being an NIU Huskie? You may include, but are not limited to, feelings and experiences regarding orientation, registration, communication with a roommate, taking classes, interactions with professors, finding your way around campus, and/or move-in day. 2) Go to www.niu.edu/studentinvolvement/organizations and browse the various organizations and clubs offered at NIU. After reading some of the descriptions, choose three organizations (academic or social) and write about why you might like to be involved with one or more of these organizations in the fall. Include your thoughts and feelings regarding getting involved at NIU. (one page)
